রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ধর্ম বলতে কী বুঝতেন? হিন্দুত্ব বলতেই বা কী বুঝতেন অথবা শিক্ষা, দর্শন, জীবন, মনুষ্যত্ব সম্পর্কেই বা তাঁর অভিমত কী ছিল? স্বরাজ, স্বদেশ, পল্লী,স্বাধীনতা, সমাজ সম্পর্কে তার বক্তব্য কী ছিল? সঙ্গীত, সাহিত্য আর শিল্পকলা বা অভিনয় বলতেই বা তিনি কী বুঝতেন? পলিটিক্স বা হিন্দু মুসলমান সম্পর্ক অথবা ভাষা কিমবা প্রকৃতি ইত্যাদি সম্পর্কে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি কী ছিল– সেটা জানতে গেলে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের তাবৎ প্রবন্ধ পড়া ছাড়া আর কোন দ্বিতীয় পথ নেই। তবুও অভিধানস্বরূপ এই গ্রন্থটি রবীন্দ্র প্রবন্ধ গুলিকে ২৭ টি বিভাগে বিভক্ত করে ৮০০ টি প্রবন্ধ উদ্ধৃতি সংকলিত করে সমগ্র বিষয়টিকে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছে। সাথে আছে মূল প্রবন্ধ ও প্রবন্ধ গ্রন্থের নাম এবং শেষে পরিশিষ্টে প্রবন্ধের রচনাকালের উল্লেখ।
