ব্রিটিশ সাম্রাজ্যবাদ বিরোধী আন্দোলন তৎকালীন বাংলাদেশে নাট্যজনদের চেতনায় নতুন করে অনুপ্রেরণা জাগায় আর সেখান থেকেই জন্ম হয় গণনাট্য সংঘের। গণনাট্য সংঘ গঠিত হবার আগে সর্বভারতীয় ভিত্তিতে কোন সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন ছিল না। গণনাট্য গড়ে উঠেছিল ঐতিহাসিক প্রয়োজনে, মার্কসবাদী আদর্শে। মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পরবর্তী সময়ে বাংলাদেশের শিল্প-সাহিত্যে এক বিরাট পরিবর্তন লক্ষ্য করা যায়।
বাংলাদেশের নাটক হয়ে ওঠে সমাজ বদলের হাতিয়ার। সমাজ সম্পর্কিত বিষয়কে প্রতিপাদ্য করে রচিত হয় বিভিন্ন নাটক। আর এই পরিবর্তনে নতুন সম্ভাবনার দিগন্ত তৈরী করে বাংলাদেশের মঞ্চনাটক।
